De Rossa seeks criminal prosecutions for Gaza civilian deaths in Irish courts

24/02/2010

Labour MEP for Dublin, Proinsias De Rossa, speaking today in the European Parliament in Brussels has said, "Israel denies this Parliament its democratic right to meet members of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza, and denies access to our Foreign Ministers.

"A Hamas Militant is murdered most likely by Israeli agents, using forged European passports, breaching Irish, British, French, German and Dubai sovereignty.

"Israel is treating us with contempt; which is not surprising given the impunity with which she continues to infringe the rights of millions of Palestinians.

"The acid test of our commitment to Human rights and the rule of law is our response to the Goldstone report which found that:

"The siege of Gaza is collective punishment of the population and Operation Cast Lead was to further that policy.

"It found evidence of wilful torture, inhuman treatment and wilful causing of great human suffering.

"It recommends the Report go to the International Criminal Court and that the Quartet insist on the rule of law

"I also support Goldstone's call on State parties to the Geneva Conventions, including Ireland, to start criminal prosecutions in national courts against the alleged perpetrators of war crimes.

"I intend to submit the Goldstone Report to Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy with a view to potential criminal prosecutions which are permissible under Ireland's 1962 ratification of the Geneva Convention Act.
